by Monique

17 déc 2009

visionobjectlogo
DoubleDay Holdings, a private equity firm based in Dayton, Ohio, USA, focused on emerging technology businesses, and Vision Objects, a privately-held firm specializing in handwriting recognition technology, announced today that DoubleDay will acquire all outstanding shares of Vision Objects. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Vision Objects, located in Nantes area,  develops and markets its proprietary MyScript technology, the most advanced and accurate handwriting recognition technology available on the market. MyScript has more than four million users worldwide with offerings in 87 languages.
Founded in 1998, Vision Objects’ technology covers a broad spectrum of market applications including form processing, notes management, education, mobility & messaging, and automotive.

The acquisition of Vision Objects complements DoubleDay’s previous investments in digital writing that include ownership of ExpeData, a global leader in enterprise digital writing solutions, and significant share holdings in publicly-held Anoto Group, whose unique technology for digital pen and paper enables transmission of handwritten text into a digital format.

« We believe in the power of handwriting recognition technology and the benefits it delivers to education, consumer and business markets, and we consider Vision Objects an important player in the growth of digital writing,” said Paddy Padmanabhan, managing director of DoubleDay Holdings. « Vision Objects will provide us with the core competency needed to enhance our digital writing investment portfolio.”

Stefan Knerr, CEO of Vision Objects, said: « Joining forces with DoubleDay will allow Vision Objects to accelerate our innovation process and build on our global business momentum. We will be better able to leverage our expertise and deliver new handwriting recognition capabilities. As we serve our customers in all markets – from health care, financial services, transportation and education to the rapidly emerging e-devices market – Vision Objects will continue to innovate and work in close collaboration with our partners.”

Focus on Virtual and augmented reality in Picnic09

by Monique

23 oct 2009

When I attended Picnic 09 a month ago in Amsterdam I saw some amazing demos during Picnic Labs and listened to people with amazing ideas (as often in Picnic as well as in the Next Web which is much more dedicated to Internet !). But both are based on people’s creativity !

picnic1
Many of them were having links with the virtual and augmented reality, 3D, immersion, games, design, RFID, interaction, convergence…
- augmented and virtual reality (the virtual continuum of Paul Milgram)
- Machinima (movies made with 3D on real time using video games engines)
- Immersive journalism : a novel way to utilize gaming platforms and virtual environments to convey news, documentary and non-fiction stories. Those platforms might offer audiences an immersive experience that can complement and extend reporting in traditional news media
- Natal project of Microsoft Office Labs: it’s a new motion-control, you don’t need anymore a remote control to play video games (you interact with your own body). Not new but still fascinating !  and its Milo Project : a virtual-person game.
- the Emotiv EPOC™ that is a high resolution, neuro-signal acquisition and processing wireless neuroheadset
- the web of things : such as the WaNomirror of No Design which is a mirror but it is also an object that provides information and services. It is both a screen and network window that displays thoughts sent on Internet by your friends or the subjects you are interested in, from the Internet service Twitter.
- Augmented reality of a city : YDreams

and many more…

If you want to have details, have a look on the Picnic web site and links about it.
There was also the Green Challende Postcode Lottery : some infos soon…

Another point is the creativity of the  Picnic shows and the nice and pleasant places where you can meet very easily people. You feel at ease there.

picnic2

Maybe we will see some of those demos in Laval during the 12th International Conference on Virtual Reality (Laval Virtual) next April 7-11, 2010.
