NFC mobile phone : the end of all the cards and tickets in handbags ??

The Near Field Communication or NFC technology is booming and is more and more present in the consumer market.
What is it? According to Wikipedia, NFC is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology which enables the exchange of data between devices over about a decimetre distance. The technology combines the interface of a smartcard and a reader into a single device. It is thereby compatible with existing contactless infrastructure already in use for public transportation and payment.
Another application is Smart poster – the mobile phone is used to read RFID tags on outdoor billboards in order to get info on the move.
Close to Gemalto, HP, Visa International, members of NFC Forum, while at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, I met young companies (from Scotland, Spain…) using this technology.
One of the aims is actually to create customer loyalty … and makes me spend money ! Anyway. The future of NFC ? Electronic tickets – airline tickets, concert/event tickets, and others electronic money, travel cards, identity documents, mobile commerce, electronic keys. Everywhere I said.
Services will converge on mobile phone.
